The Galaxy

Picture
The Galaxy Project was an attempt to do fun activity with children while introducing them about the outer-space. In this activity, I tried to use recycled materials such as the toilet tube and yellow hard-paper to create the satellite; the used recycled bottle, aluminium foil, and red color paper to create the rocket; the colorful pom-poms with the black hard-paper to create the 3D Milky Way stimulation in its simplest form; and paper plate with blue, green, and white paints to create the earth. Each child chose their own work and then at the end of the project, everyone compile their work and I posted their work on the board to display a collage where the children can feel proud for their work while learning about the outer-space.

Save the Environment

In this project, each child learns about the ozone layer, the meaning of the symbol of 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle), and the problems of CO2 that comes from the factories and cars. Once again, I tried to use recycled materials to create different artworks, example is the used of plastic wrap for ozone layer. This activity is a week long where each day, I introduced different activity to them that include planting seed flowers with used plastic bottles as the containers.

Kids Around the World

Picture
Kids Around the World is a project to introduce children that there are many other children outside their own little circles. I tried to expose them to children of poverty and let my students to express their sympathy to the other children through writing letters and their wishes for the other children.

Children also were introduced to different nationality flags. The seemingly guided activity became more creative when children, themselves started to draw, paint, and write what matter most in their hearts. My students wrote in simple words but they are profound and symbolized their big hearts:

"I would like to help kids in Africa"
"I would like to help kids around the world"
"I would like to do good thing to the world cuz I love the world"

Parents also loved this simple activity because through their children's artworks/letters for the other children, parents were also reminded about the situation of under-privilege children in the midst of their busy work.

Tracking Your Own Heritage

Tracking Your Own Heritage is a project for children to learn about their unique ethnic backgrounds. Many of my students came from diverse backgrounds, but almost all of them had little idea about this and considered themselves simply as Americans. One of my student loved this project so much that at the time when we posted the board, she dressed up with her national costume since her heritage was Dutch. Some other students had multiple ethic backgrounds and through this project, they can learn more their cultural identities aside from their national identity as American.
